Local Port Selection and Using Multiple VoIP phones

In order to allow two or more SIP terminals (VoIP phones or devices) on a network to operate reliably behind one router, please ensure each SIP terminal uses different Local Ports.


Most VoIP phones and devices will be pre-configured to use the following ports:

  • Listen SIP Port: 5060
  • Listen RTP Port: 5004

Instead please set your first VoIP phone to use:

  • Listen SIP Port: 44160
  • Listen RTP Port: 44104

For the next VoIP phone please use:

  • Listen SIP Port: 44260
  • Listen RTP Port: 44204


For additional VoIP phones or devices, continue increasing the ports so that each additional phone uses a successive SIP port like: 44160, 44260, 44360, 44460, etc (and the same for the starting RTP port: 44104, 44204, 44304, 44404, etc).

If your SIP device requires Start (Min) and End (Max) local RTP port values to be specified, it should be sufficient to use RTP port ranges like 44104 - 44120, 44204 - 44220, 44304 - 44320, etc.


Router Configuration

If issues arise after changing the Local Ports used by your VoIP devices, please disable SIP ALG (click here) and Stateful Packet Inspection, SPI, options if supported by your router.
If issues still persist, please assign a static IP address to your VoIP phones and devices.
Then, in your router settings, port forward the SIP and RTP ports (UDP) used by your VoIP Phones and devices.

With port-forwarding in use, please omit any included STUN Servers from your VoIP device's settings and disable the router option UPnP.


Don't confuse sipgate's SIP server ports (which are always 5060) with your phone's Local Ports!
Some multi-line VoIP devices use a Global Local SIP port (e.g. Aastra, Siemens Gigaset and Snom devices).
Other multi-Line devices use a different Local SIP Port for each active Account or Line (e.g. Grandstream, Yealink deskphones, and Cisco/Linksys Small Business devices).
Please continue the above incremental port numbering for device that allows each active Account/Line to be given a different Local SIP Port.
The Local SIP Port is sometimes called the 'SIP Signalling Port' or 'Listen SIP Port'. The Local RTP Ports may be called the 'Audio' or 'Media' ports.
Where can I find my Phone's Local UDP Port Settings?
Under Advanced --> SIP/RTP the Local SIP Port is the 'Network Identity Port' and the Local RTP Ports are the 'Dynamic RTP Port Start/End'
The 'Local SIP Port' is located in the 'Account' menus and the 'Local RTP Port' will be in the 'General' or 'Advanced Settings' menu.
Each Line or Account can be allocated a different Local SIP Port.
The local ports are located under 'Telephony' --> 'Advanced' --> 'Listen Ports for VoIP Connections'.
Please do not enable the options to use Random Ports.

Cisco/Linkys SPA:

Each 'EXT' or 'Line' under 'SIP Settings' has a 'SIP Port' setting.

The RTP ports will be found under 'Voice' --> 'SIP' --> 'RTP Parameters'.



Open 'Configuration' --> Network --> Local Port.

The RTP port used by PhonerLite will be set to two ports higher than the chosen Local (SIP) Port.


Zoiper Desktop:

Open 'Settings' --> 'Preferences' --> 'Advanced' --> 'Network'. 

Under 'SIP Options' the Local SIP Port can be changed and the starting RTP port can be chosen under 'RTP Options'.

Please disable the options to use Random Ports. 


Zoiper (Apple iOS):

Click on 'Settings' --> 'Advanced' to change Zoiper's Local SIP and RTP Port settings.


Zoiper (Android):

You'll find the Local SIP and Starting Local RTP Port settings under 'Config' --> 'Connectivity' --> 'Listening Ports'. 


CSIP Simple:

From the Menu below the Dialpad select 'Settings' --> 'Network' to change CSIP local ports. 

The Local SIP Port is called the 'UDP Port - port number to bind locally'.

With the Expert set up Wizard selected, each VoIP account can also be allocated a different "Port for RTP ports range start".


Bria (Apple iOS):

From the Dialpad click 'Settings' --> 'Advanced Settings'.

Under 'Media Options' the SIP Port Range and 'RTP Port Range for Audio' can be chosen.

The Start and End SIP Ports should be the same value (don't use a range of SIP ports).


Bria (Android):

The Local SIP port used by Bria for Android can't be changed.

The Starting RTP port Bria uses can be changed under Settings --> Advanced Settings.


Bria Desktop and X-Lite:

Open Your sipgate account Settings and click on the 'Topology' tab to change the softphone's Local SIP ("Signalling") port and RTP ports.



Each Line can be allocated a different Local SIP Port ("SIP Source Port") under "VoIP" --> "SIP Settings" --> 'Line x'.

The RTP port settings will be found in the "VoIP Settings" menu.
